CGM Manufacturing Models Compared: Private Label, OEM, SKD and CKD
2026-10-13 · Verid Bio
Ask three CGM suppliers what "manufacturing partnership" means and you will get four different answers. The vocabulary — private label, OEM, ODM, SKD, CKD — gets used loosely across the industry, and buyers routinely sign agreements for one model while imagining another.
This article lines the four working models up side by side: who owns the design, who carries the regulatory burden, where the money and the risk sit, and which markets each model actually fits. Read it before you read any quotation.
Verid Bio was the first CGM provider to enable SKD/CKD production models overseas. We run all of the models below, and we have seen every way they can be mismatched to a market.
The four models at a glance
| Private label | OEM / ODM | SKD | CKD | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| You own | Brand + customer | Brand + custom spec | Brand + local assembly | Brand + local production |
| Factory owns | Everything else | Core platform design | Sensor design + components | Sensor design + components |
| Local value-add | None | None | Assembly, packaging, QC | Deep assembly incl. electronics |
| Regulatory path | Reliance on manufacturer's file | Reliance + variants | Often local registration | Local registration |
| Customization depth | Logo, packaging, app skin | Hardware + software spec | Kit composition, packaging | Kit composition, process |
| Best fit | Fast brand launch | Differentiated product | Tenders, local-content rules | Tariff shields, deep localization |
| Common trap | Underestimating brand cost | Scope creep on spec | Thinking it is "just box assembly" | Underestimating QC build-out |
Private label: the brand launch model
What it is. The manufacturer has a validated, registered CGM system. You put your brand on the packaging, the app and the marketing. Nothing about the product itself changes.
Why buyers pick it. Speed and simplicity. You are buying time-to-market: months instead of years, with the sensor's clinical history, accuracy data and manufacturing track record already in place.
What people get wrong. Private label is easy to start and easy to be copied. If your only differentiator is the logo, your neighbor can sign the same logo deal. The durable advantage in private label is distribution, clinical relationships and service — which is exactly what our private label CGM guide covers.
Regulatory note. In most jurisdictions you can lean on the manufacturer's existing approval as the importer/distributor of record, but your name goes on the local registration. Budget real time for that paperwork; it is not a formality.
OEM / ODM: the differentiation model
What it is. The factory owns the core platform; you specify the configuration — transmitter form factor, app features, sensor wear time, packaging architecture — within the platform's validated envelope. ODM leans further: the factory designs to your brief.
Why buyers pick it. They have a specific market requirement the standard product does not meet: a longer wear time for a reimbursement category, an app integration for a hospital chain, a form factor for pediatric use.
What people get wrong. Every deviation from the validated platform reopens validation work — accuracy studies, biocompatibility, software verification. Customization is priced in months of engineering, not just dollars. Anchor your spec to the platform's validated envelope and you keep most of private label's speed; drift outside it and you are doing product development.

SKD: the local assembly model
What it is. Semi-Knocked-Down: the factory exports complete kits — sensors, transmitters, applicators, packaging components — and your local facility performs final assembly, packaging and quality checks. The sensor itself is not manufactured locally; the product is.
Why buyers pick it. Three forces push markets toward SKD:
- Tenders and local-content rules. Government procurement increasingly scores local value-add. SKD is often the minimum configuration that qualifies.
- Tariffs and import economics. Finished-device duties can be materially higher than kit components.
- Supply resilience. A local assembly capability shortens the reorder loop and creates jobs regulators like to see.
What people get wrong. SKD is a quality system, not a logistics trick. Your local line inherits the manufacturer's process documentation, and your QC must hold the same release criteria. A sloppy SKD line destroys a brand faster than no brand at all, because failures carry your logo.
The full process — what ships, what is assembled, what is checked — is in what is CGM SKD.
CKD: the deep localization model
What it is. Completely-Knocked-Down: components ship at a deeper level of disassembly — down to electronics, sub-assemblies and raw packaging stock — and local production covers substantially more of the build, often including PCB-level or module-level work under the manufacturer's transfer package.
Why buyers pick it. Maximum local-content scoring, the strongest tariff position, and a manufacturing footprint that can later evolve toward full technology transfer. For markets with industrial-policy ambitions in medical devices, CKD is the statement of intent.
What people get wrong. CKD without a mature local quality culture is how medical device programs end up in the news. It demands trained staff, calibrated equipment, environmental controls and an audit-ready QMS — before the first kit ships. Treat the factory's process transfer as a project with its own timeline and budget, not as an appendix to the supply agreement.
How to choose: four questions
- What does your market's procurement actually reward? If tenders score local value-add, private label and OEM cannot win regardless of price — start at SKD.
- What is your regulatory capacity? If you cannot run a local QMS this year, buy speed with private label or OEM and build assembly capability in parallel.
- Where is your durable differentiation? If it is distribution and service, private label is enough. If it is a specific product capability, OEM. If it is being the local manufacturer, SKD/CKD.
- What does your cash flow survive? Deeper localization means more fixed cost before the first sale. Match the model's fixed-cost curve to realistic first-year volume, not to the board deck.
Many of our partners run a staged path: private label now, SKD in eighteen months when tender eligibility matters, with the OEM spec work running in the background. The models are not a menu you order from once; they are gears you shift as the market matures.
Before you sign anything
Whichever model you choose, the supplier due-diligence questions are the same, and we have listed them in how to choose a CGM SKD manufacturer. If you are comparing routes into the market at a higher level — distribution versus manufacturing — becoming a CGM distributor covers the lighter-entry alternative.
